Mapping Atmospheric Exposure of the Intertidal Zone with Sentinel-1 CSAR in Northern Norway

چکیده

The intertidal zone (ITZ) is a highly dynamic and diverse coastal ecosystem under pressure that provides important eco-services. Being periodically water makes it challenging to monitor, the only possibility map in all tidal stages by using dense time series of observations. At high latitudes, Sentinel-1 (S1) constellation European Copernicus Program consistently radar imagery at fixed times on near-daily basis, independently cloud cover sunlight. As tides have period 12 h 25.2 min, 1–2 year long S1 are therefore able sample whole range and, thus, percentage atmospheric exposure ITZ, which an environmental parameter. Tidal reference levels mean high/low spring, neap tide correspond each specific percentiles heights inversely exposure. presented method maps basis purely statistical analyses without need for any gauge data, extracting lines via simple thresholding backscatter images. individual thresholds second, fifth, 25th, 50th, 75th, 95th, 98th percentile image were determined fitting threshold contour situ line GPS tracks collected corresponding five locations around Tromsø Northern Norway. They exposures 98%, 95%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 5%, 2%, respectively. was applied Municipality resulting ITZ map. validation shows low neap, mid, spring mapped with accuracies 93%, 84%, 64%, overall approach should be applicable worldwide.

The Internal and External Calibration of the Sentinel-1 CSAR

The ESA Sentinels constitute the first series of operational satellites responding to the Earth Observation needs of the EU-ESA Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme. The GMES space component relies on existing and planned space assets as well as on new complementary developments by ESA. This paper describes the in-orbit calibration aspects for the Sentinel-1 mission. ...

Radiation exposure of the surgeons in sentinel lymph node biopsy

Background: Sentinel node biopsy (SLNB) is the standard of care for breast cancer treatment and it is getting wide acceptance in Iran. The radiation safety of the procedure has been investigated under controlled conditions, but the standard dose of radiotracer and techniques are not always observed in the community setting. The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of the absor...

Quartz exposure in the slate industry in northern Norway.

In this study we have measured exposure levels to quartz in different parts of the slate industry in Alta, Northern Norway. Full shift personal samples were collected from the breathing zones of outdoor and indoor workers in the slate quarries and a slate factory. The quartz content of respirable dust was between 7 and 41%. The slate factory had the lower quartz levels although 41% of total and...

Predation by Norway rats in the intertidal zone of central Chile

The rocky intertidal zone of central Chile compnses a diverse array of invertebrate and vertebrate (i.e. birds, fish, humans) predators In this system, like in most temperate rocky shores, predation by small 'terrestrial' mammals such as mice and rats has been largely overlooked. This study documents predation on intertidal organisms by Norway rats Rattus norvegicus in a marine preserve in Las ...
